Shared Decision-Making: Why Your Voice Matters in Healthcare

Healthcare decisions are not always black and white. Sometimes there are two or more medically reasonable options, each with different benefits, risks, costs, or effects on daily life.
This is where shared decision-making matters.
It is a process in which your doctor brings the best available medical evidence and clinical expertise, while you bring something equally important—your goals, preferences, concerns, and circumstances. Together, these are used to choose the option that fits you best.
For example, one treatment may work better but cause more side effects. Another may be less intensive but require closer monitoring. The medically “best” choice can therefore depend partly on what matters most to you.
Shared decision-making does not mean patients are left to make difficult medical choices alone. Doctors still explain the options, benefits, risks, and uncertainties and provide professional guidance. The decision is made with you, not simply for you.
Before an important healthcare decision, three simple questions can help:
What are my options? What are the benefits and risks?Which option best fits my priorities?
Good healthcare is not only evidence-based. It is also patient-centred.
